Diego Villaseñor's work sprawls in vivid color in a new monograph that shares his name (Rizzoli, $75) . Juxtaposing photographs of the modern Mexican architect's diverse portfolio with his own writing, the book explores Villaseñor's design philosophy and sources of inspiration.

Villaseñor founded his firm, DVA, in 1973, going on to create a wide array of structures throughout Mexico, South America, France, the U.S., and the Caribbean. The lavish private residences, hotels, and resorts for which he is known seem to emerge from their surroundings, playing with natural light and materials to reflect the local environment. The technique, borrowed from adherents of the Land Art movement, sources natural materials like local stones and raw earth to create buildings in which the architecture itself “disappears.”
