After launching its 2020 smart TV range at CES last month , which come with Apple TV as standard, LG has now released the app for older models.

From today, the app is available on LG's 2019 OLED TVs and NanoCell TVs – series SM9X and SM8X – in 80 countries including the UK and US.

Later this month, the Apple TV app will roll out to select UHD TVs in the UM7X and UM6X series before coming to LG's 2018 TVs by the end of the year via an over-the-air firmware upgrade. All of LG's 2020 TVs will come with the app from launch.

With the Apple TV app, people with compatible TVs wll be able to watch Apple TV content, including any shows or films they've previously purchased from iTunes, via their TV's home screen.

Owners will also be able to buy or rent more than 100,000 films and TV shows, and subscribe to Apple TV channels — direct subscriptions to premium video services available online and offline, ad-free and on-demand – as well as access their Apple TV Plus subscription.

Apple TV Plus was announced at last year's WWDC and launched in November. It's a streaming service, similar to Netflix, which you need to pay a monthly subscription fee to watch.

As is the case with Apple's other subscriptions, such as Apple Music, Apple TV Plus subscribers get unlimited access to the full catalogue of shows, which they can watch on any device with the Apple TV app installed, for £4.99 a month.

The Apple TV app is already available on Samsung smart TVs, Roku Sticks and Amazon’s range of Fire TV products, as well as on Apple TV, iPads, iPhones and Macs, of course. Support for Sony TVs, plus the Fire TV Cube, is expected soon.

LG's 2019 TVs also support Apple AirPlay 2, which lets users share or mirror content from their iPhone, iPad or Mac to their LG TV, and it lets them sync the TV with other AirPlay 2 compatible speakers to play music in every room.

This support also extends to Apple HomeKit, which means LG TV owners can control their TV with their voice, via Siri, or via the Home app.
