2010 AD100: David Jameson

by David Stewart

One of the hallmarks of architect David Jameson’s work is his ability to recast concepts and spaces, crafting singular, wholly contemporary environments he describes as “habitable art.”

Take a house on the Maryland shore that at first glance appears as a series of modern, geometric pavilions. On closer inspection, the early American antecedents are apparent. Or perhaps a Washington, D.C., art gallery he designed (his practice takes on boutique commercial projects as well as residential commissions) that departs from the usual wide-open model and instead provides visitors with a more intimate viewing experience. For each, Jameson, a 2004 recipient of the AIA’s Young Architects award, was sure to reflect “on the forces and constraints that come to bear on a project—the site, light, budget and program—then distill those forces into a tectonic concept that resonates with elegance and clarity,” he says.
