Linda Garland understands dreamers. She has always followed her own dream, making a name for herself with interiors in Bali, Jamaica and Fiji. Because she balances her professional life with a number of projects she’s passionate about, Garland generally takes on only one residential project a year. With such a strict quota, how does she choose?

“It’s usually an emotional decision,” she explains. “I usually really like the client, and I love the piece of land. It’s got to be both of those. It has to be good chemistry.” She fills the rest of her time overseeing Panchoran Retreat, her riverside home turned hotel, in Ubud, Bali, and working as an environmental advocate—most notably for the Environmental Bamboo Foundation. “The fast-growing plants help conserve water and slow deforestation,” she says. Multitasking comes easily to her: “I’m always excited about design—it’s just that it’s only one of the things I’m excited about.”
