Blenheim Palace Looks Best When It’s Empty

by David Stewart

Blenheim Palace—the sprawling 18th-century English estate that once housed the Dukes of Marlborough—is the latest historic building to be emptied of its tourists for the Instagramming pleasure of some filter-savvy tastemakers. The occasion? American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner has installed a series of text-based works and site-specific creations amid the palace’s lavish period rooms and on its baroque exterior. Blue letters spell out “Within a Realm of Distance”—the show’s title—across the grand entrance. On an ornately framed mirror, “So Far Flung” is written in blocky text that might be printed on your high school gym uniform. Silver words, arranged in a circle, glint from the ceiling’s elaborate molding. And black letters runs above limestone archways. Cleverly stamped across the luxurious living spaces, some works are easily spotted, and others, not so much. Need a hint? Check out our favorite Instagrams from the #emptyblenheimpalace meet-up.
