How to Choose the Right Size Dumpster

by David Stewart

When it comes to renting a roll-off dumpster, deciding which size to get seems simple, right?

Well, not quite. A lot of factors go into deciding what the best size is for you. Those factors include the type of debris, amount of debris, and price .

But before deciding on which size dumpster to rent, you first have to decide whether or not you even need a dumpster. That’s the easy part. Depending on how much stuff you’re looking to get rid of, you either need a dumpster or you don’t.

If you need a dumpster, however, then the decision becomes a little more difficult – choosing the right size.

The less you’re looking to get rid of, then a smaller size may be best. The more you’re looking to get rid of, then a bigger size may be best. It’s that in between amount of debris – as well as type of debris – that may have you second-guessing yourself.

“I don’t have that much stuff, so a 10 yard dumpster will do.”

“Wait, I have more than I thought. I think I’ll go for the 15 yard.”

“Hmmm, maybe a 20-yard would be better, just in case I decide I want to throw more stuff out.”

“Just to be safe, let’s go with the 30 yard.”

“Although, the 40 yard is only this much more, so that makes the most sense.”

For some, deciding on which size dumpster to rent may seem as challenging as deciding on where to go out to eat. And, no, the response “I don’t care” doesn’t apply to deciding on which size dumpster you need. You want to make sure you have enough space for everything you want to get rid of.

Understand what the sizes mean

Budget Dumpster offers roll-off dumpsters in the sizes of 10 , 15 , 20 , 30 and 40 yards.

It’s important to know that these sizes are measured in cubic yards, which is a measurement of their volume. There are 27 feet in one cubic yard (3′ x 3′ x 3′). For example, a 10 yard dumpster can hold 10 cubic yards of material. That’s equivalent to 270 (10 x 27) cubic feet.

A 15 yard dumpster can hold 15 cubic yards of material. A 20 yard dumpster, 20 cubic yards, and so forth.

Deciding on what size dumpster to rent depends a lot on your project. Below are dumpster sizes and the projects most associated with them.

The 10 yard dumpster is the smallest in size and, ideally, used for smaller projects. If you don’t have a lot of debris or the space to fit a large dumpster, a 10 yard dumpster is safe.

The 20 yard dumpster is the mid-size dumpster and the most commonly rented dumpster. Given its versatility, this size dumpster is suitable for a variety of projects.

The 30 yard dumpster is associated with bigger projects. This size dumpster is a great height if you’re looking to dispose of large furniture.

The 40 yard dumpster is needed for the biggest of projects and should only be used when you have excessive amounts of waste.

Keep weight in mind

When it comes to deciding on which size dumpster you’ll need, it’s important to factor the weight of your materials in the decision process.
