Meet Dutch Designer Maarten Baas, Who Is Giving One City In Netherlands a Facelift

by David Stewart

In the Netherlands, designer Maarten Baas has partnered with two teams of architects from Dutch-based firm Van Aken Architecten to create residential designs for a development in the city of Eindhoven. In a competition for Dutch Design Week 2015—the annual event, which kicked off this weekend, brings together more than 2,400 designers and 250,000 attendees to debate the designs of the future through dozens of exhibitions—Baas’s two teams were tasked with revamping a residential site, De Bakermat plaza, that was once voted the fourth ugliest place in all of Holland.

Team A’s proposal includes a group of mismatched, almost cartoon-like towers constructed of varying colors and materials. Team B’s proposal is much different, including structures seemingly built on stilts while white-framed pentagonal windows extend outside the building’s exterior. Both designs play off the concept that De Bakermat plaza is known for—unsightliness—yet the towers are so strikingly strange, some may argue they’re beautiful. During the weeklong competition, members of the public will be allowed to vote on the two plans, and the winner will be announced on Friday, October 23. Construction on the chosen design is scheduled to begin in 2016. For more information on Dutch Design Week 2015, visit ddl/en .
