Snowy Retreats That Are True Winter Wonderlands

by David Stewart

When the first snowfall arrives and the landscape becomes blanketed in a delicate layer of white powder, a feeling of magic courses through the air. Snowsuits and skis are quickly packed into the car as ski bunnies everywhere head to the slopes to indulge in a bit of winter fun. So, in the spirit of the frosty season ahead of us, we combed through our archives for wintry homes every cold-weather enthusiast will appreciate. From a rustic retreat in Big Sky, Montana, to a historic house in New York state and a sleek residence high in the Rocky Mountains, there is no better place to be on a snowy day. Shown: Perched high on Red Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, a house designed by Studio Sofield in collaboration with Studio B Architects features a stone-and-mahogany exterior with Tischler und Sohn windows affording expansive views.

In the home’s dining room, a retractable Tischler window looks out to snow-covered Aspen Mountain.

Collaborating with Mathis Meier Architekten, firm S. R. Gambrel designed the interiors of this rebuilt Zurich home for longtime clients.

A wall of glass encloses the home’s indoor pool, providing a beautiful view of a Fernando Botero sculpture.

Architect Peter Marino designed this dramatic retreat in the Rocky Mountains for himself and his wife, Jane Trapnell Marino.

Stunning mountain vistas frame an Anselm Kiefer sculpture in the entrance gallery of the retreat.

Atelier AM gave the interiors of this Aspen, Colorado, vacation home—built by architect David Finholm using bleached spruce logs—a compelling contemporary redesign.

Overlooking the surrounding mountains, the home’s living area features a mix of vintage chairs.

The brick façade of Forth House—the Livingston, New York, home of Jim Joseph and Scott Frankel—stands out against the crisp white snow.

In the historic home’s kitchen, glass-front cabinets fashioned from antique glazed windows display the couple’s elegant collection of dinnerware.

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani’s added scratchwork decoration known as sgraffito to the exterior of his Saint Moritz, Switzerland, escape.

Vibrant chairs pop against the moody floors and walls of the home’s winter garden.

Snowcapped Lone Peak rises behind this stone-and-timber residence decorated by Michael S. Smith.

The living room of the Big Sky, Montana, retreat offers incredible views of the mountain locale.
