This cheap JVC TV deal is the best we've seen this Black Friday

by David Stewart

The JVC Fire TV Edition isn’t going to win any awards for offering the best picture quality, but it offers an awful lot of screen for the price. Debuting at just £330, the 4K set has now seen a price cut to make it even more tempting this Black Friday.

Right now at Currys PC World, you can buy the 40in version for £259 – a saving of £71 on its original price. And if you feel like you need more, you can buy the 43in version for £279 (down £101) , the 50in model for £329 (down £110) , the 55in one for £369 (down £131) or the 65in beast for £479 (down £171) .

No matter which model you choose, this is one serious bargain.

If you buy a screen this cheap, there are going to be drawbacks, but they’re perfectly acceptable for the price. The interface can feel a little sluggish, for example, and while it supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), performance with all these forms of High Dynamic Range is somewhat limited. Motion and upscaling were also markedly weaker than more expensive sets in our tests.

But as a smart TV, it’s quite well served. As well as BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5, Netflix and Disney Plus, the TV naturally has Amazon Prime Video front and centre, thanks to the Fire TV interface that powers things.

This Amazon tie in is also apparent when you see the heavy prominence that Alexa has, and you’re able to press the microphone button on the remote to ask for specific shows on streaming platforms, as well as quiz the TV as you would any Echo device. As our reviewer Tom Bruce said in his review : “in some ways it’s rather like a giant Echo Show.”

In our experience, the best way to enjoy the JVC Fire TV Edition is to use the ‘Film’ picture preset, to give colours a more natural and accurate look. And if you find a programme that uses Dolby Vision, the Dolby Vision dark profile looks far more glorious than it has any right to at this price.
