What Top Designers Obsessed Over at Art Basel Miami Beach

by David Stewart

Tromping around Miami last week (in the pouring rain, no less) was not unlike one very long cocktail party. And as we bumped, time and again, into our design world friends snapping up arty finds for their projects (or themselves), we couldn’t help but ask the most popular question of the week: “What did you love ?” or perhaps more frankly, “What did you buy ?” We’re here to disclose the details.

Alexander Gorlin, Architect The much-Instagrammed swinging leather shark chair by Porky Hefer at the Design Miami booth of Southern Guild caught Gorlin’s eye. “This hilarious rendition of a domesticated ‘Jaws’ 1960s bubble swing chair combines comfort and horror in one fun form. One sits in the mouth of the shark and swings from a red cord.”

Stephen Sills, Interior Designer “The fantastic Joris Laarman chaise at Friedman Benda was my favorite piece from Design Miami. I think he is one of the great contemporary designers of furniture.”

Frank de Biasi, Interior Designer “So many things caught my eye! I posed for a picture inside the Wieki Somers boat bathtub at Galerie Kreo .”

Haynes-Roberts, Interior Design Firm Timothy Haynes and Kevin Roberts of Haynes-Roberts scooped up this Günther Förg painting at Almine Rech Gallery .

Brett Gorvy, International Head of Postwar and Contemporary Art at Christie’s Gorvy fixed his eye on a few Haas Brothers accretion vessels at R & Company .

Rafael de Cárdenas, Interior Designer “I loved Quintus Kropholler’s pieces at the Chamber booth at Design Miami.”

David Mann, Interior Designer Mann was taken with Isla (Calma) by the Cuban artist Yoan Capote at Jack Shainman . “From a distance it could be interpreted as a relentless seascape, simply the ocean and horizon. On closer inspection one realizes that the sea is mostly rendered with real fish hooks.”

Yvonne Force Villareal, Art Production Fund Cofounder “Still Life with Xitle and Spirit by American artist Jimmie Durham at Peter Freeman Gallery featured an old Chrysler Spirit crushed by a gigantic volcanic basalt rock, its roof totally caved in and windows smashed.”

Alessandra Branca, Interior Designer “I loved the Campana Brothers’ new leather works at Firma Casa from São Paulo.”

Humberto Campana, Designer “I did not have so much time to see the fair, but one thing that caught my eye was the work of Wendell Castle at Friedman Benda —he is still in great shape!”
