Would You Bid $25,000 on a Tree?

by David Stewart

Exceptional plants from some of the most respected nurseries in Europe are being offered for sale this weekend in an online-only auction by Drouot that ends on November 1. The event comprises a total of 257 lots and is grouped into five broad categories, including European and non-European trees and shrubs, Mediterranean, topiary, waterlilies, and bonsai.

The auction was organized by Nicolas de Boigne of Domaine des Rochettes, in La Prévière, France. Many individual growers sell plants online, so what makes this auction unique is that Boigne has curated a mix of extraordinary plants from a wide group of Europe’s top growers. In other words, gardeners obsessed with bonsai will be just as delighted as those yearning for an exquisite ancient olive tree.

Lot 96, Prunus lusitanica.

Along with wonderful rare examples of hydrangea and rhododendron, highlights include a Japanese maple tree (lot 16) that is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The specimen was planted in the 1960s and is expected to go for $22,000 to $27,500. A delicate, lacelike, light blue hydrangea (lot 48), known as a Mikamba, native to Japan, comes with an estimate of $38,500 to $49,500. And an impressive pair of 25-to-30-year-old lime trees (lot 109) trimmed in three-tier graduated steps is expected to bring in $15,400 to $17,600.
